Who Should Consider Buying an Automated Wire Bender
The automated wire benders are a great investment for laboratories that want to increase production, improve consistency, simplify training and prepare for future growth. It makes the most sense for labs that produce a steady volume of wire appliances and want to reduce their dependence on highly experienced wire benders.
It's an excellent fit for:
Growing orthodontic laboratories
Labs struggling to hire experienced wire benders
Labs with repetitive wire bending workflows
Labs looking to increase production without adding additional staff
Labs wanting more consistent, repeatable bends
Owners planning for long term growth and automation
Who Should NOT Buy An Aoutmated Wire Bender
Labs producing only a small number of wire appliances each week
Start up labs with limited budgets and low production
Labs that primarily fabricate appliances the machine cannot currently bend
Labs expecting the machine to completely replace skilled wire benders
Owners who aren't ready to invest time in training and implementing a digital workflow
These automated wire benders are a production tool, not a magic solution. If your lab doesn't have enough repetitive wire work to keep it busy, it may sit idle more than it runs.
My opinion:
Buy the machine because it solves a production problem, not simply because it's new technology. If your lab doesn't have that problem yet, your money may be better invested elsewhere until your production grows.

FAQ's

How much does it cost?

MB1B7 Bender $65,000 w/ 1st Year Software & Roll of Wire

Yearly Software Fees: $8900

Approx $900 for Replacment Roll of Wire

How accurate is it?

The Short Answer, it’s Pretty Damn Accurate, I’d Say 90% Average.

This Machine Does Struggle With Adams Clasps. AOS Says, They Are Actively Working to Improve.

Bottom line: The Machine Bends Consistent to The Design on Screen.

Does it replace a wire bender?

No! You'll still need a wire bender and pliers to make final adjustments and hand bend complex wire designs.

These benders complements a skilled technician, it doesn't replace one!

How many appliances per day?

There isn't a single answer because production depends on the type of appliance, the operator's experience, and whether you're designing new appliances or bending previously saved designs.

In our lab, we design and bend throughout the day, so production varies based on the workload. Once an appliance has been designed and saved, the AOS can bend most wires in 30 to 40 seconds and AOS reports that, when running previously designed parts in batches, the machine is capable of producing approximately 100 to 110 wire forms per hour under peak conditions.

My advice: Don't focus on how many parts the machine can produce in a day. Instead, look at how much it increases your lab's overall production. In our lab, for the appliances the AOS is capable of bending, we experienced approximately an 80% increase in wire production while improving consistency and reducing manual wire bending.

How long is training?

Training is actually one of my favorite things about this machine!

If you have basic computer skills, you can usually learn the software and begin producing quality wire bends in 4 to 5 days.

If you're younger and comfortable with computers, CAD software, or VIDEO GAMES...we've found many people can understand the software and start producing good wire bends in as little as 1 to 3 days. In our experience, learning the orthodontic terminology and appliance design typically takes a few additional weeks.

Bottom line: Training someone to use the AOS is significantly easier than teaching someone to become an experienced hand wire bender with pliers. My Advice; Hire a young Gamer!

Can it bend straight wire?

No! Spool wire only. Many wire sizes are available.

How much maintenance is required?

The AOS requires very little routine maintenance. The main tasks are keeping the machine properly calibrated and maintaining the air compressor according to the compressor manufacturer’s recommendations.

Regular calibration (20 min process) helps ensure accurate, consistent bends, while basic air compressor maintenance may include draining moisture, checking filters and monitoring air pressure.

Bottom line: The maintenance is minimal compared with the amount of production the machine can handle.

How often are software updates released?

The software is updated regularly with improvements, new features, bug fixes and performance enhancements. One thing I've appreciated is that the AOS team is genuinely open to customer feedback. If users identify a way to improve the workflow or make the software more efficient, they're willing to listen and often incorporate those ideas into future updates.

From my experience, they're focused on continually improving the software rather than leaving it unchanged after the sale.

How long until ROI?

Return on investment will be different for every orthodontic laboratory. It depends on several factors, including your production volume, labor costs, appliance mix, staffing challenges and how much hand wire bending you're currently doing.

In our lab, for the appliances the AOS is capable of bending, we experienced approximately an 80% increase in wire production. That increase in efficiency allowed us to produce more consistent wire bends while reducing the amount of manual wire bending required.

If you're considering investing in an automated wire bender, I recommend looking beyond the purchase price. Consider the long term benefits, including easier training of new employees, increased production, improved consistency, reduced dependence on experienced wire benders and the ability to better prepare your lab for future growth or sale.

Bottom line: The ROI isn't just measured in dollars...it's also measured in time saved, production capacity, consistency and the ability to scale your lab more efficiently.

If you're unsure whether an automated wire bender makes financial sense for your lab, I'd be happy to discuss your workflow and help you determine if it's the right investment for your specific situation.

Jason. Ortho Outlaw.

For nearly 30 years, I've owned and operated orthodontic laboratories in Northern California, with a passion for designing efficient lab workflows, building orthodontic laboratories and embracing technology that improves consistency and productivity.

The AOS Automated Wire Bender wasn't provided to me for review. I purchased it for my own lab because I wanted to solve real production challenges, improve consistency and prepare for the future of orthodontic manufacturing.

Everything you'll find in this Resource Center is based on real world use in a production orthodontic laboratory. When I looked for this kind of info and videos, there weren't any...and that's how Ortho Outlaw was born.

My goal isn't to convince every lab to buy this machine. My goal is to help you determine whether it's the right investment for your lab.

If it earns my approval, it's because it proved itself, in the lab.
